The market closed lower for the sixth consecutive session today. The Sensex slipped 50.40 points to 20,609.12, and the Nifty lost 15.65 points to 6,139.05 as rate sensitive stocks such as HDFC Bank Ltd continued to tumble a day before the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is widely expected to raise interest rates at its policy review.
The S&P BSE Healthcare index rose 1.51% to be the biggest gainer, while the Bankex index was the biggest loser, falling 1.28%.
The gainers included Bharti Airtel Ltd that rose 4.32% to Rs.327.55 and
Cipla Ltd that added 2.92% to Rs.388.15.Among the losers, Coal India Ltd shares fell 3.12% to Rs.277.95, while HDFC Bank shed 3.46% to Rs.659. Among midcaps, Financial Technologies ,TVS Motor,Trent , Whirlpool and Blue Dart rallied 5-11 percent.
However, Godfrey Phillip,Ruchi Soya,J K Cement, Sobha Developer and India Cements declined 3.5- 5%. The rupee fell against the US dollar in thin trade. Therupee ended trading at 62.02 per dollar, down 0.44% from
previous close of 61.75. It had opened at 61.755.
